What’re wrinkles?

Update: July 20th, 2009

Skin wrinkles are every human beings worst nightmare. Those thin, creased grooves may first begin to appear as light, fine barely noticeable lines that can quickly deepen into furrows, if neglected for too long. We think of wrinkles as appearing primarily on the face, but these can be just as visible on the neck, hands and fore arms.

Wrinkles are caused due to several factors.  The most common factor in the appearance of wrinkles in ageing, but these can also be formed because of inappropriate lifestyle choices, excessive sun exposure, exposure to pollution, premature drying of the skin etc.

As a person ages, the skin loses valuable collagen which is responsible for keeping the skin looking supple, firm and smooth. The loss of collagen leads to the formation of wrinkles. Exposure to the rays of the sun and winds can cause wrinkles to begin appearing much earlier than they should. Besides lack of care of the skin, the use of harsh chemicals and facial treatments can cause the skin to dry out much quicker, leading to the appearance of those dreaded lines. In fact, over a period of years, sun exposure can set off a process called photo aging, in which the skin begins to take on a discolored, leathery quality. The skin starts to show a yellow tinge, and there may be freckles and dark spots. The blood vessels can become visible, and wrinkling can be seen.

As part of the aging process, the skin’s sweat and oil glands also become fewer in number, and shrink. The skin begins to lose essential moisture, and it begins to dry out. Sagging begins in those areas where collagen reserves have depleted the most. For instance, the skin around the eyes, around the mouth, near the jaw and the neck tends to be more prone to collagen depletion, and therefore, more prone to aging and wrinkles.

There can also be genetic factors involved in the early appearance of wrinkles. Pre-mature aging can sometimes be an inherited quality.

In order to prevent fine lines from worsening into deep and highly noticeable furrows, it’s important to begin some form of anti wrinkle treatment as quickly as possible. Creams, anti wrinkle lotions and other products are effective for fine lines, but when deeper wrinkles have begun to form, a person may need more drastic measures like laser treatment and plastic surgery.
